Legislative Update

Legislative Update

March 16, 2023 Legislation, Rockwool

We are making a difference! Representatives from Jefferson County Vision (JCV) traveled to Charleston WV for Environmental (E-day) in February.  During that trip they had a chance to meet with legislators about the bills that were up for vote.  We’re happy to report that several bills will further our goal of protecting the counties natural environs.  Funding to to address the public health hazard of “forever chemicals” passed as did a significant increase in funding to West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) Office of Oil and Gas (OOG).  The additional funds will provide more inspectors to monitor and report on the wells.  Much needed as the state has over 75,000 wells.  You may recall there was talk of building ATV trails alongside the Appalachian Trail.  An amendment to bill SB468 passed which will prohibit further expansion of ATV/ UTV trails on public lands.

Two bills of concern passed  HB2814 which creates a Hydrogen Power Task Force  as well as bills SB161 and SB162 passed.  These allow  the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to lease state-owned spaces for carbon sequestration.

Our friends at The West Virginia Environmental Council are keeping an eye on the outcome of these bills. More information on these bills and others can be found here.
